Papua New Guinea (PNG) has quickly become one of the world’s most exciting exploration regions, with significant petroleum potential in the Gulf of Papua (GOP) and its Northern Basins.
Historically, PNG had sparse and poor legacy seismic coverage which resulted in a poor understanding of the older sections of the basins. Acquisition of new geoscience datasets and modern reprocessing efforts of historical data has led to the identification of several angular unconformities , each suggesting distinctive tectonic packages that have not been previously recognised.
The latest surveys in the area have revealed exciting new potential by highlighting the prospectivity in this frontier region.
Synchronisation of high quality seismic data and regional synthesis studies allow a more comprehensive play identification in the GOP and Northern Basins.
