Searcher Leads the Way with Ghost Net Initiative

23 Mar 2017

Searcher Seismic is pleased to have lead the way with the ‘Ghost Net Initiative’ set up by the International Association of Geophysical Contractors (IAGC).

In 2015, whilst acquiring 2D data offshore Western Australia, Searcher Seismic recognised the amount of lost fishing gear, or ‘ghost gear’ in our waters.

Paul Miller, Operations Manager suggested seismic crew collect as much as this debris as possible and return it to dock at the end of the rotation for recording and sustainable disposal.

“Our goal is to leave the areas where we operate, in better condition than what they were when we started”, Mr Miller said.

This Ghost Net Initiative was then adapted and led by the IAGC, who have successfully implemented an annual report encompassing the magnitude of good done by environmental stewards in the geophysical industry.

The IAGC has also recently partnered up with Heathy Seas; launched by non-governmental organization, the ECNC Land Sea Group, along with companies Aquafil and Star Rock.

Healthy Seas recycle ghost nets and other waste into high quality ECONYL yarn which forms the basis for brand new sustainable textiles.

For those wanting to jump on board and be a part of the Ghost Net Initiative, more information can be found here
